![]() Leadership Development: Leadership IdeasIs Your Organizational Leadership Stifled?by Loreen Sherman, MBA High-impact leaders think. Expression of thought is a very important factor in organizational development. Thought leads to ideas which in turn leads to new product development, new solutions and new ways to gain a competitive advantage. Leadership development helps leaders learn new ways to express themselves and to find expression for new services. What are some of the challenges that executives face in thought creation? One answer to this complex question is that organizational leadership is very structured. The levels of communication are complex and integration or interaction between levels is complex. This complexity in the organizational structure in turn leads to variance in organizational behavior. This creates a confusing platform that many are intimidated by. So, one reason why creativity is curbed is that it gets lost in the confusion of the organization. Reason 1: Confused Organizational State Loses Thoughts Whenever an organization is compartmentalized it faces the problem of losing the thoughts from each of the people employed within it. This is because the people have not learned how to communicate their ideas because of a lack of attention, from fear or from repression. Many employees are not secure in their job positions and fear that expressing ideas could cause repercussions. Leadership development helps the organizational leadership address these limitations in order to have free-flowing communication. Reason 2: Lack of Creativity Because the Tools of Expression are Not Known Thinking is a natural state of mind but brain-storming requires structured and unstructured thought. High-impact leaders are able to balance the structure in thought so that others can undertake meaningful engagement from their considerations. For example, a business leader may have a proposal idea but if the idea is not expressed within the proper frameworks then it will not be considered. Expression requires frameworks. This is one of the main reasons why many business leaders are not able to take advantage of their innovation or creativity. Too often they lack the tools to express themselves formally with structured business plans or proposals. Reason 3: Ideas are Not Properly Stored Many ideas are expressed but are not followed through. The end goal of a brain-storming session is to have results. Measurable and attainable results. Organizational leadership must record and administer measurable steps to implement the ideas created. Here is a List of Action Steps to Store Your Next Organizational Leadership Idea (2) Assign a level of priority to the idea. (3) Assign a date of action for employment of idea. (4) Determine who the best stakeholders are to discuss the idea with. (5) Schedule follow-up discussion to determine benefits, costs and risks. (6) Ask if the new idea is in alignment with your organization's values and mission. Leaders get many ideas but picking choice ones takes time. Experience is a useful tool to determine if the idea is salable.
