Leaders Eyes Are Visionary
Leadership Element: Do Leaders See Different?
Leadership Sight is Visionary

Leadership Sight is Visionary

What do Leaders See?

What do Leaders See?

by Loreen Sherman, MBA

High-impact leaders see. The craft of seeing is rarely discussed. One reason is that the ability to have foresight has been both feared and revered. Sight has been feared as in the cases of demonic witchcraft but this short article will move to discuss how foresight is a positive force used not in witchcraft. Foresight in business will be defined as a leader's ability to plan ahead and 'see' the future. In short, the leader's ability to envision a brighter, better future for his business and community.

The ability to plan in itself requires the ability to have vision because an outcome or end-result is hoped for. To illustrate this point an architect uses blue-prints to plan a house or architectural element. However, before the plan could be drawn the architect had to dream. This preparation is the same as what leaders do to plan their business. Leaders must dream of something tangible to create. Another way to describe this is that leaders must see a project, a service or a product that will make more money for their company and so they try to figure out how to build their vision of what they see. Visionaries are planners. Visionaries are creative and innovative. Visionaries are doers.

To expand on the idea that visionaries are planners means that leadership development programs are needed to help organize the thoughts of leaders. The ideas must be penned in ways that others can understand them. Formal business proposals are required to put the creative thought into a structure that others will follow. This requires mastering the art of communication. To plan means to be organized and have purpose. Visionaries have purpose. The reason a company is built is based on a vision but the vision is not intangible; instead the vision is the blue-print of the company.

To expand on the idea that visionaries are creative and innovative means that leaders must be allowed to make mistakes. They need to be corrected and to learn. Often the first attempt at something fails such as when a person first starts learning how to ride a bicycle. They fall, they get up, they learn to ride. Leaders will make mistakes. Leaders must learn from their mistakes. A true visionary will continue to build his idea or conception until it becomes actualized. The ability to adapt and be flexible is required. A true leader will make new decisions based on new information to improve his vision and build for a better future. True sight requires input and information to help guide and support decisions. True sight is solidly grounded on principles and realistic insights based on both education and experience. The creative genius inside a leader becomes well developed with input from many areas. Business leaders need to build their knowledge base. One way to do this is with leadership development programs.

To expand on the idea that visionaries are doers means that they do not wait to take action. They are decision makers. They are ready to invest in self-improvement and in business support. Visionaries see that others who grow with leadership development means that their business grows so they strive to have the best employees and workers. True visionaries know the value of the human component.
