![]() Organizational Leadership: Three Conflict ScenariosIs the Baby Boomer's Mindset Subject to Societal Change?by Loreen Sherman, MBA Important Strategic Information to Know from Conflict Scenarios A conflict scenario is a tool to help organizational leadership learn response mechanisms. This is helpful for team leadership because conflict resolution saves time, money and emotional costs. When a team is under conflict the productivity in an organization reduces. Therefore, using tools to decrease the conflict is a benefit to the organization. A conflict scenario includes both content and contextual elements to make the team leaders think. Creative ways to solve the scenario help team leaders solve real problems. Scenarios are similar to simulations. Each scenario allows the team leader to reflect on possibilities. This helps the team leader consider time constraints and look for alternatives. Each scenario in this short article is only an open door to help make decisions. Conflict scenarios are an important step in pro-active problem solving. Scenario 1 – Descriptive. You are new to Whitehorse, Yukon where you have been asked to lecture your respective clients on environmental awareness. The problem is that you are trying to arrange a meeting on July 10. Why is this problematic? The descriptive scenario provides a problem with defined parameters so that the team leader can visualize the problem. Scenario 2 – Engagement. You have lived in Whitehorse all of your life and do not like outsiders. You have been asked to chair an upcoming meeting on July 10 indoors. Why is this problematic? The engagement scenario involves the team leader to be a part of the problem. The contextual environment created alerts the team leader to actualize more constructive and real solutions. Scenario 3 – Point-of-View. You are the owner of the hotel and have been called to see if July 10 is a good time to arrange a booking in Whitehorse, you know that the people value their short summer but you have an opening. Why is this problematic? The point of view scenario provides an opportunity for the team leader to look at the problem from another person's perspective. This helps identify culture differences and increases culture awareness. The need to solve conflict is important. The range of office conflict is wide and team leads must have tools to help. The three conflict scenario tools are just one aspect of good leadership development programs and seminars to help manage conflict.
